Philadelphia style of pizza – The cheese combo of heaven!

Philadelphia is known for its unique style of pizza, often referred to as “Philadelphia-style” or “Philly-style” pizza.

The pizza dough used in Philadelphia-style pizza is typically thicker than traditional New York-style thin crust. It is often hand-tossed and shaped into a round or rectangular shape. Here is how to make one:

Ingredients:

  • Pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • Tomato sauce (canned or homemade)
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Toppings of your choice (e.g., pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers)
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: grated Parmesan cheese, dried oregano, garlic powder

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to the highest temperature possible. Most home ovens can reach around 500°F (260°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to preheat as well.
  2. Roll out the pizza dough on a floured surface to your desired thickness. For Philadelphia-style pizza, a slightly thicker crust is typical.
  3. Transfer the rolled-out dough onto a pizza peel or baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Lightly brush olive oil over the surface of the dough, then season with salt and pepper.
  5. Spoon tomato sauce over the dough, spreading it evenly, leaving a small border around the edges.
  6. Sprinkle a generous amount of shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce, covering the entire pizza.
  7. Add your desired toppings evenly over the cheese. Popular options include pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, and bell peppers.
  8. Optional: Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese, dried oregano, and garlic powder over the top for added flavor.
  9. Carefully transfer the pizza (with the parchment paper, if using) onto a preheated pizza stone or directly onto a baking sheet.
  10. Bake the pizza in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  11. Remove the pizza from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing.
