  1. Preheat the Grill or Pan:
    • Preheat your grill to medium-high heat or a large skillet over medium-high heat. Make sure it’s hot before cooking the burgers.
  2. Shape the Patties:
    • Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions.
    • Gently shape each portion into a patty, being careful not to overwork the meat. Make them slightly larger in diameter than your burger buns, as they will shrink when cooking.
  3. Season the Patties:
    • Season both sides of each patty with salt and black pepper. You can also add any other seasonings or spices you like, such as garlic powder or paprika.
  4. Cook the Patties:
    • Place the patties on the hot grill or in the skillet. For medium-rare burgers, cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side. Add a slice of cheese (if using) during the last minute of cooking and cover the grill or skillet to melt the cheese.
  5. Toast the Buns:
    • While the patties are cooking, split the burger buns in half and lightly toast them on the grill or in a toaster until they are golden brown.
  6. Assemble the Burgers:
    • Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun.
    • Add the cooked patty with melted cheese on top of the lettuce.
    • Layer with sliced tomatoes, onions, and pickles.
  7. Add Condiments:
    • Spread ketchup and mustard (or your preferred condiments) on the top half of the buns.
  8. Complete the Burgers:
    • Place the top bun over the condiments to finish assembling each burger.
  9. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Serve your delicious homemade burgers immediately while they’re hot.
